The Path
Training at Université de Bourgogne gave Guillaume Large a classical grounding from the start, with Burgundy as the reference point rather than the afterthought. That foundation carried into Maison Louis Jadot in Burgundy, France, where he worked as winemaker until 2016. Since then, Résonance in Carlton, Oregon has been the setting for that same discipline, translated into the Willamette Valley without losing its Burgundian frame.
The Work Today
At Résonance, Pinot noir and Chardonnay call for precision rather than force, and Guillaume Large works accordingly. The cellar is used to separate, observe, and preserve: handpicked fruit, separate tanks, block by block. As he puts it, the aim is to “boost, check, and verify the complexity” of those grapes, and to let the winery reveal the terroir of each vineyard. That approach keeps the work measurable and restrained. Large describes the winemaking as simple at Résonance, but the simplicity is procedural, not casual. It depends on reading each vintage on its own terms, with maceration length and temperature adjusted to the fruit, no inoculation with yeast, and wines left to rest quietly in barrels. The emphasis stays on what the grapes bring, not on what the cellar can impose.
In Their Words “We pick the grapes by hand and vinify each vineyard in separate tanks, block by block, to boost, check, and verify the complexity of the Pinot noir and Chardonnay. In this way, we use the winery to reveal the terroir of each vineyard.” “Every vintage is different, based on what the grapes need—macerations will vary in length and temperature, we do not inoculate with yeast, and we let the wines rest quietly in barrels.”
