The Climb

From 1991 onward, Hans Oliver Spanier founded Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier in Hohen-Sülzen, and that start set the terms for the work that followed: patient, exacting, and closely tied to place. The progression was built parcel by parcel and vintage by vintage, with observation doing the heavy lifting. In Hohen-Sülzen, Spanier’s attention narrowed toward soil, stone, and terroir, and that focus became the backbone of the estate. Today, Hans serves as chief enologist of Weingut Battenfeld Spanier, where the work still rests on the same measured discipline. The title implies oversight, but the craft is more responsive than directive. It depends on listening to the vineyard, the season, and the quiet differences that only emerge when fruit is treated as an expression of site rather than an end in itself. In that sense, the present role extends the logic of 1991 rather than replacing it.

Today

As chief enologist of Weingut Battenfeld Spanier, Hans remains tied to a winemaking style that values structure, nuance, and the layered expression of site. The method resists haste and stays with what is underneath the obvious. Instead of chasing immediacy, it lets stone and soil register in texture and mineral imprint, which is where the wines take shape.

Signature

Hans's signature wines include FRAUENBERG, Mölsheimer Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott, Hohen-Sülzener Kirchenstück, Mölsheimer Schwarzer Herrgott, and Kreuzberg. Each name fixes the wine to a specific geography, and together they map the range of his work across carefully tended vineyards. What connects them is not just fruit, but the structure underneath it and the site-driven character that gives each bottling its shape.
