The Path
Helgard van Schalkwyk’s training at Stellenbosch University in 2008 set a technical base for work built around precision, restraint and control in the cellar. The route that followed was practical rather than performative: more interest in reading wine from the ground up than in dressing it up. That approach found years of application when Helgard van Schalkwyk served as assistant winemaker to general manager at Lynx Wines in Franschhoek from 2008–2020, where experience was accumulated through repetition, consistency and close attention to vineyard character as it moved into bottle. Since 2023, Helgard van Schalkwyk has been winemaker at Nitida Wine Farm, a role that extends the same working logic: make decisions that serve the site, not the other way around. The progression is steady, not abrupt, and it places the emphasis where his career has consistently sat — on detail, on measured execution, and on the craft of letting place stay legible in the wine.
The Work Today
At Nitida Wine Farm in Durbanville, Helgard van Schalkwyk works with cool-climate grapes in a region where the micro-climate carries real weight in the glass. His method is minimal intervention: the cellar follows the vineyard rather than trying to overwrite it. That keeps the work direct. The fruit is handled with a light hand, and the wines are shaped by what the site gives rather than by a fixed template imposed after the fact. “The wine starts in the vineyards. Look after them and great wine will follow,” Helgard van Schalkwyk has said. The line is plain, but it sets out the order of operations clearly: vineyard care first, cellar decisions second. It is a working principle built on patience and repetition, season after season.
In Their Words “I wanted to taste the wine I was making. I wanted to get my hands dirty and actually feel the process. Scale was the enemy of everything I cared about.” “The wine starts in the vineyards. Look after them and great wine will follow.”
Acclaim
The work is defined by minimal intervention and close attention to the Durbanville micro-climate. For Helgard van Schalkwyk, restraint reads as method rather than style: confidence in site, season and fruit, with the cellar used to preserve that character rather than replace it.
