Those schools point to a practice built on precision, where viticulture and cellar discipline are treated as linked crafts rather than separate tasks. At Creation Wines on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in South Africa, the work is framed by stewardship of site. Jean-Claude Martin describes the ground in exact terms: “First of all we have 450-million-year-old Bokkeveld shale and drained clay loam soils which combined with our cool climate create excellent winegrowing conditions.” That reading of the land sets the terms for the estate: observe closely, intervene sparingly, and let the site do its work.

Where They Are Now

Three responsibilities sit together at Creation Wines: co-owner, viticulturist and cellarmaster. Jean-Claude Martin moves across those roles from vine to cellar, with ownership tied to the long view and cellar work tied to the detail of each season. It is a position built on measurement, timing and a steady hand. The Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge gives the work a stable frame, and Martin says so plainly: “Working in volatile weather conditions in Europe prepared me for many eventualities, however here on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge we’re fortunate to have very stable conditions.” The point is not drama but conditions — what the site allows, what it asks for, and what it makes possible over time.
