The Climb

Training at École d'ingénieurs de Changins gave Jean Hoefliger a formal base before his first practical hours as cellar rat at his godfather’s estate in Switzerland. That start matters in this trade: it puts the work in the cellar before the rhetoric around it, and it sets a habit of learning wine from the ground up. From there, his path moved through Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, Château Carbonnieux in Bordeaux, Meerlust in South Africa, Hartford Court in Sonoma, and Newton Vineyard in Napa, where he was winemaker in 2001. Those stops map a winemaking education built by repetition across different places, not by theory alone. Each role added another way of reading vineyard material, climate, and structure, with the result visible in a career that values precision and a clear sense of site. Today, Jean is winemaker of AXR Napa Valley.

Today

At AXR Napa Valley, Hoefliger holds the winemaker/partner role, which places him inside both production and estate direction.
