The Climb

Training at Montpelier gave Jean-Pascal Lacaze a base in cellar discipline and the patient demands of vineyard work. The work is technical, but it is also about reading place closely; that sensibility was already present in the way his craft was formed. The move from Montpelier to St. Émilion, then to Uruguay, widened the field without changing the terms of the work. Each post placed Jean-Pascal Lacaze in a different terroir and tradition, and each added to the same through-line: wine made by staying in conversation with the land rather than working around it. Lead Winemaker at Domus Aurea became the point where that experience settled into continuity. In 2002, Jean-Pascal Lacaze took on the role and began shaping a long run of work that would be defined less by movement than by accumulation, season after season.

Today

At Domus Aurea in Santiago de Chile, Jean-Pascal Lacaze has held the winemaker role since 2003. The position keeps the work tied to the same Chilean setting that has framed this later chapter, with the vine and the site setting the tempo of the day. Precision, place, and consistency remain the basis of the job. With Jean-Pascal Lacaze, the craft reads as steady rather than theatrical: training carried forward, experience kept in use, and the vines left at the center of the work.

The names move between Domus Aurea and the Lacaze Private Collection, with the 2020 and 2021 vintages marking the contemporary end of that line.
