The forward’s craft before the Tampa assistant-coach role was built through school hockey, Princeton University, Washington, D.C, and a long professional ledger. Born May 3, 1976, Jeff Halpern worked through the game as both player and coach, carrying habits from one room to the next.
Coming Up
The development track ran through Winston Churchill High School and St. Paul's School, then through four varsity seasons with Princeton Tigers men's ice hockey team in Princeton University (1995–1999), where Jeff Halpern sharpened the college version of his game before entering the professional ranks. The next stage was Washington Capitals (1999–2006), with a European interlude at HC Ajoie in Switzerland (2004–2005) and Kloten Flyers in Switzerland (2004–2005), followed by the captaincy at Washington Capitals (2005–2006). The professional route continued through Dallas Stars (2006–2008), Tampa Bay Lightning (2008–2010), and captain at United States national team for the World Championships in Canada (2008), then through Los Angeles Kings (2010), Montreal Canadiens (2010–2011), Washington Capitals (2011–2012), New York Rangers (2012–2013), Montreal Canadiens (2013), TPS in Finland (2013), and Phoenix Coyotes (2013–2014). The bench work followed the playing work: Jeff Halpern became full-time assistant coach at Syracuse Crunch (2016–2018); today, Jeff is assistant coach of Tampa Bay Lightning (since 2018).

Assistant coaching at the Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa is now the working station. Jeff Halpern’s assignment centers on the forwards, with emphasis on the centers and the Nikita Kucherov-led power play, and it matches the plain account he has given of the trade: “I always knew I wanted to coach.
