i. Biography
The Path
At Centre College, the groundwork was education; in New York City kitchens, the groundwork became service, timing, and room reading. Jody Williams moved through Tappo, Morandi until 2008, and Gottino until 2010, building a style rooted in attentiveness rather than excess. The throughline is a kitchen hand that favors a well-made meal and a room that can welcome people without strain. Since 2009, Chopped (Food Network) has added a different kind of discipline to Jody Williams’s practice: judging in real time, with the pace and pressure that come with television competition. Alongside that, Buvette since 2011, Via Carota since 2014, and Commerce Inn since 2021 show the same work extended into restaurants built to hold food, design, and atmosphere together.
The Work Today
Restaurant making, in Jody Williams’s case, is as much about structure as menu. Buvette, which she has founded and operated since 2011, rests on intimacy and control of scale. Via Carota, where she has been chef and co-founder since 2014, carries the logic of shared authorship. Commerce Inn, co-founded in 2021, continues that line: a dining room shaped by composition, pace, and the practical demands of service. On Chopped (Food Network), where Jody Williams has been judge since 2009, the craft shifts from making to evaluating. The work depends on quick reading and experience, but also on the chef’s ability to recognize what pressure does to decision-making, and what it takes to keep a plate coherent when time is short.
Signature
Petit burger is listed among Jody Williams’s signature dishes, and it matches the rest of her work in scale and intent. The appeal is in proportion, restraint, and the handling of something familiar so it lands with clarity rather than noise.
In Their Words “We’re totally different, but we just have this bond in cooking.”
Acclaim
Jody Williams’s recognition includes the James Beard Award for Best Chef in New York City and the French Le Fooding Award. Read together, they mark a career defined by consistency of execution and by the kind of dining experience that feels coherent from room to plate.
