The Climb

Johannes Scheid’s route into wine was built in stages: study at Geisenheim University, then time on the floor at Schug Winery in Carneros Estate, California, where he worked as an intern from 2009. From there, the work moved through the core functions of the trade. He became Production Manager at Benziger, then returned to Schug Winery in Carneros estate, California as Assistant Winemaker from 2016–2019. Taken together, those roles put him in contact with the full span of production, from vineyard to cellar to the timing that holds a wine together. Since 2019, Johannes has been winemaker of Schug Winery and leader of a wine project of Sonoma High School.

Today

At Schug Carneros Estate Winery in Sonoma, Johannes works within a European winemaking philosophy that favors terroir and elegance over force. In practice, that means seasonal decisions made with restraint, so the site can stay legible in the glass. Carneros gives the work its frame: bay influence, a long, cool growing season, and the kind of conditions that tend toward lifted perfume and layered complexity rather than sheer power. Pinot Noir is central to Johannes’s work. It is a grape that shows site and season quickly, and in Carneros AVA that responsiveness becomes part of the finished wine. The style here is shaped by elegant aromas and complexity, and Johannes’s role is to keep that balance intact: let the fruit register clearly while preserving the grace the place allows. At Schug Carneros Estate Winery, the work is technical and expressive in equal measure, guided by a steady read on what the land can give.
