From the cellar floor back to the estate

Since 2019, the cellar decisions have sat with Johannes Scheid. Johannes Scheid, Winemaker at Schug Carneros Estate Winery in Sonoma, works in Carneros with Pinot Noir as the central test of the place. His route into that station began before the title did: study at Geisenheim University, then an internship at Schug Winery from 2009, then production work at Benziger, then a return to Schug as Assistant Winemaker from 2016-2019. The line is not decorative. It moves through the vineyard, the cellar, and the timing that decides whether a wine keeps its shape.

Johannes Scheid works inside a house founded by Walter Schug, with a stated tradition of hand-crafted Pinot Noir from the Carneros Estate. The inheritance is practical rather than theatrical: a family-owned winery, an estate frame, and a grape that gives little cover to imprecision. Scheid has described growing up on a small family winery, helping his grandparents and parents in the vineyards, later in the cellar and in selling the wines. At Schug, that early contact with the full circuit of wine sits beside formal training and years on the floor. The work asks for judgment before gesture.

Pinot Noir held to a cooler line

The program at Schug Carneros Estate Winery is built around Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with the Estate Pinot Noir carrying Scheid’s signature most clearly. Carneros gives him the conditions the house names as its frame: bay influence, a long, cool growing season, and fruit that can move toward perfume and layered complexity rather than weight. The cellar philosophy is European in its restraint, favoring terroir and elegance over force. That does not mean absence of technique. It means technique kept in proportion.

Pinot Noir is a severe collaborator. It registers site and season quickly, and in the Carneros AVA that responsiveness becomes part of the wine’s structure. Scheid’s task is to keep fruit, acidity, and aromatic lift in relation, so the estate does not disappear behind extraction or polish.

The ridge, the tasting room, the cellar

The estate sits at the base of a high ridge in Carneros, with vineyard views carrying into a quiet tasting room. The setting matters because the work here is not separated from its weather. Bay influence and the cool season are not brochure language for Scheid; they are the conditions he has to answer in the cellar. The room is warm and hospitable, but the governing mood is measured, more cellar than spectacle.

On the grounds, the scale reads small enough for attention to remain visible. The vineyard gives the place its first grammar, then the cellar edits. In the tasting room, the glass returns the conversation to Pinot Noir: the grape Walter Schug’s estate is known for, and the one Scheid now has to carry without making it louder than Carneros allows.
