Where They Are Now

From Zeltingen-Rachtig in the Mosel, Johannes Selbach works in a landscape where slope, stone, and light are part of the production language. One fixed reference point in that work is Kabinett Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, noted for its floral and peach notes and lovely balance and harmony. The wine reads as Mosel in register: restrained, precise, and built on structure rather than weight. Selbach’s own comparison of Seneca Lake and the Mosel Valley is specific: “I see many similarities in Seneca Lake to the Mosel Valley, including steep slopes, low-pH soils comprised of shale and slate, and a cool growing season which is moderated by the lake.” The comparison is a practical one, centered on terrain and climate rather than romance.
