Single-vineyard wines sit at the center of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle’s work, and the principle behind them is stated plainly: “The value of great wines is closely linked to the land and its people.” That line is less a slogan than a working rule. The vineyard comes first, and the land is treated as the source of definition, not decoration. Training at Burdeos gave the work its early discipline, and the career that followed kept returning to the same point: precision, origin, and the character of place. Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi was founded by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle in 1985, and that project established the terms he would keep using across later estates. Artazu followed in 1996, then Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé in 1999, each one extending the same focus on identity rooted in vineyard and site. The through-line is consistent: titles matter less than the craft behind them, and the craft stays anchored to the land that gives the wines their form.

Where They Are Now

The present work still turns on the vineyard as the main source of value. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle keeps the project fixed on land and vine, with no change in direction from the principles that shaped the estates from the outset. His own wording is direct: “We would like to highlight that there is no change in our project. We will keep betting on the land and the vineyard as the main sources of value for our wines.” In trade terms, the message is clear: continuity is not inertia here, but a chosen standard.

Signature

Viña El Pisón and El Carretil are the signature wines, and they fit the same single-vineyard logic that defines the rest of the work. Their importance comes from clarity of origin: wines that make the source legible, rather than relying on ornament or excess.
