At University of California, Davis, that technical frame was sharpened into a working language, one she still uses plainly. In the roles that followed, the same methodical approach carried through Napa Valley and beyond. Training at University of California, Davis led into a career built through repetition, harvest pressure, and close observation. Winemaker at Seavey Vineyards (first post-graduation position) The early years established the habits that matter in a cellar: consistency, attention, and the ability to read what fruit and timing are asking for. Range came through the sequence of posts that followed: winemaker at Bryant Family Vineyard, vintage worker at Unnamed winery in New Zealand in New Zealand, and winemaker at Sequoia Grove Winery in Napa Valley. Each role added another layer to the same core practice, showing how site, team, and vintage each shape decision-making. The career here is built through accumulation, not spectacle.

The Work Today

At Atelier Melka, Kelly Woods serves as associate winemaker, a position grounded in the daily, detail-driven work of cellar craft. The role suits a winemaker whose practice is equal parts analysis and touch, where each choice is part calculation and part response to what the wine is doing in front of her.

Signature

Brush Breaker and Haymaker TKO are Kelly Woods’ signature wines. The names carry force, but the point is control: wines that reflect a maker with a clear hand and a defined point of view. Read against the rest of her career, they land as direct expressions of the working style she has developed over time.

Acclaim

Haymaker TKO appears in Kelly Woods’ named Premiere Napa Valley work as a Burgess Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon lot offered in 2015. Brush Breaker, also a Burgess Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon lot, was offered in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Those repeated placements put the work in one of Napa’s most watched trade settings, where consistency and stylistic clarity are measured year by year.
