Kelly Woods reads the cellar through chemistry as winemaker at Sequoia Grove Winery in Rutherford, where Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sit at the center of the house. Kelly Woods came to the bench with University of California, Davis training behind her, the kind of education that makes math, biochemistry, and physics part of the daily cellar language rather than ornament. Her own description of the work is plain: “It's a lot of chemistry, a lot of science, math, biochemistry, physics.” At Sequoia Grove, that frame meets Rutherford fruit, a cellar program rooted in still reds, still whites, and rosé, and a property where the estate scale stays close enough for the winemaker’s hand to matter. Woods holds the station without a named predecessor or mentor attached to it. What can be followed is the discipline she brings into the role: harvest pressure, close observation, and the habit of treating each decision as both calculation and response.

Rutherford fruit under a measured hand

The program works from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Rosé of Grenache, with the Rutherford AVA giving the house its main grammar. Sequoia Grove’s own vineyard frame is specific: a 24-acre Estate Vineyard, a 50-acre Tonella Ranch Vineyard in Rutherford, and a Mt. Veeder property. That spread allows the cellar to hold several registers at once, valley floor structure, mountain influence, and the quieter lift needed for Chardonnay and rosé. The stated philosophy is sustainable, which matters here less as a label than as a way of keeping vineyard and cellar choices in conversation over time. The tastings keep the craft close to the glass: seated pours, wine and food pairings, and a blending session that lets guests see how components change when they move by measure rather than by mood. For Woods, whose training is built around systems and variables, that kind of work fits the method. The wine changes when the proportion changes. So does the argument.

The barn, the cellar, and the trees

The tasting room sits inside a historic 1908 barn, renovated with natural wood, copper accents, a fireplace, and enough quiet in the room for a pour to be discussed without performance or hurry. Outside, the patio and fire pit look toward sequoia trees and vineyard rows, so the place keeps two scales in view at once: the intimacy of the glass and the height of the trees above it. The cellar and hospitality program do not feel separate in that setting, or staged as separate experiences. One leads into the other with little interruption. Sequoia Grove’s 24-acre Estate Vineyard brings the pass into contact with the bottle, while the blending session makes the cellar’s decisions visible at the table.
