The Climb
Winemaking here is built in pieces: separate sites, separate lots, separate decisions that are assembled only after the fruit has been read on its own terms. That is the logic Kirby Anderson names in his own work, and it explains why the wines stay attentive to vineyard rather than flattening into a single house style. The point is not blur; it is fit. Weather, fruit, and site each hold their own rhythm, and the cellar’s job is to keep those parts legible in the glass. Training at University of California, Davis put Anderson in the technical center of California wine before the work moved into the cellar. At Buena Vista in Carneros / Lake County, the assistant winemaker role meant translating vineyard character into finished wine with discipline. At La Crema in Russian River Valley, that same attention to place met cool-climate fruit, careful timing, and the precision required by elegant wines. By the time he became winemaker at Gainey Vineyard in Santa Barbara County (1997–2008), the work had shifted from support to authorship, with the mechanics of fermentation joined to the quieter task of deciding when to step in and when to let the site speak. That site-first method carries through the later roles as well. As consulting winemaker of Dolin Malibu Estate Vineyards (since 2010), the vineyard’s identity remains part of the assignment. As wine maker of WiSH Vineyards, the same approach extends into another corner of California wine country. The titles change, but the operating principle does not: each property asks for its own read, and each cuvée is shaped to reflect that read as cleanly as possible.

Today, Anderson’s work is defined by a practical regionalism: different vineyards, different answers, no forced template. The career reads as a sequence of close engagements with place rather than a march toward a single fixed style. That makes the cellar function less like a stage for signature and more like a map of vineyards, with each wine carrying the structure of where it came from.
