Kirk Venge

The Climb

Training at St. Helena High School and University of California, Davis led Kirk Venge into the cellar as experimental winemaker at Mumm Napa. It was a first role with room for trial and adjustment, where precision mattered and experimentation had to be disciplined. From there, the work widened into a career defined by range, patience, and a close read of the wine as it moved from vineyard to cellar. Today, Kirk is consulting winemaker of several premium Napa Valley based producers, owner and winemaker of Venge Vineyards (since 2008), and proprietor and winemaker of Croix Estate. The titles are numerous, but the throughline is clear: the work stays tied to vineyard decisions, to detail, and to the regions that frame it.

Today

Since 2008, Venge has been owner and winemaker at Venge Vineyards in Calistoga. The role sits at the center of his current work: a Napa Valley winemaker associated with Full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and a fuller, riper style of winemaking. In a region where style can be reduced to shorthand, his wines are read through a direct and consistent line of intent — generous, structured, and rooted in place. The emphasis shifts the work outward, to the rows, blocks, and seasons that shape the fruit before it reaches the cellar. In practice, that puts farming ahead of the cellar door, with growing decisions carrying the weight of style long before fermentation. The result is a working philosophy that treats the vineyard as the starting point and the main event. He also works as proprietor and winemaker at Croix Estate. The project began because he wanted to do something in Sonoma and cross over from Napa to Sonoma; the name came to him spontaneously — Croix Estate. In a career shaped by Napa Valley, the move adds a second geography without breaking the link to the vineyard work that formed him.

Signature

Kirk's signature wines include Croix Estate, Silencieux, and Croix Floodgate Pinot Noir 2022. Together, they show the range of a winemaker working with intensity and intent, whether the aim is the depth of a house style or the specific lift and grace of Pinot Noir in 2022.
