Since 2010, he has headed Domaine des Grandes Espérances with his brother Arnaud Saget, shaping a contemporary estate through organic farming, Chenin experiments, and wines built to move with each vintage.
Beginnings
The family frame is central to Laurent Saget’s work. At Domaine des Grandes Espérances in Mesland, France, he and Arnaud Saget took charge in 2010, placing their names behind an estate defined by Loire varieties and by a willingness to adapt rather than repeat. That role sits alongside two other posts in the Saget orbit. He runs Domaine de Terres Blanches with Arnaud, and he is director of Saget La Perrière in Pouilly-sur-Loire, France, connecting his work across estates tied to Loire place, appellation, and family responsibility.
The Rise
At the Mesland estate, the brothers pursue sustainable viticulture and have had all cuvées certified organic since 2020. The farming choice is not presented as a side note to the wine; it is part of the estate’s structure, a way of making bottles that answer to site, season, and the demands of certification. The domaine works with eight typical Loire Valley grape varieties, using that range to create generous wines and to continually adapt them by vintage. Diversity is treated as practical freedom: more grapes, more responses, more room for a year’s character to register in the glass. One emblem of that freedom is Le Génie Orange, a 100% Chenin white maceration cuvée, also known as an orange wine. For Laurent and Arnaud, it symbolizes the freedom to make wine as they wished, a signature work that places Chenin in a different light while staying within the estate’s Loire vocabulary. Another named bottle, Barbule, Crémant de Loire, Extra Brut, bio, NM, is also made from 100% Chenin blanc. In that cuvée, the grape appears in sparkling form, organic and Extra Brut, showing another route through the same variety without leaving the family’s Mesland project.
Today
The estate is described as contemporary and forward-looking, producing generous, festive wines full of charm and promise. Those words matter because they point to a style that is not austere or static: the wines are framed around pleasure, movement, and a confidence in the Loire’s breadth. Attention has also reached Domaine de Terres Blanches through its Sancerre. Laurent Saget described the unexpected visibility as useful not simply for one bottle, but for the larger place it came from: "Even if we had wanted to place one of our bottles in such a widely watched series, we couldn’t have afforded it. It’s nice to have a spotlight land on the appellation and on our domaine." His public language returns often to appellations and gathering. On support for the organization of the Pouilly Sancerre race, he said, "Support for the organization of this Pouilly Sancerre race seemed to us to be an opportunity to bring people together around our appellations and share the richness of our terroirs." Seen across his roles, the through-line is a Loire map drawn by estates rather than by abstraction: Mesland for Domaine des Grandes Espérances, Pouilly-sur-Loire for Saget La Perrière, and Domaine de Terres Blanches with Arnaud.
