i. Biography
Since 2002, Lukas Baumgartner has been the second-generation owner of Baumgartner Weinbau in Tegerfelden, Switzerland, with Sandra Baumgartner beside him in the work. His formation is a family inheritance: the first Baumgartner winemaking generation began as a hobby, and Lukas and Sandra took that beginning and established it as a successful winery. The line now runs in both directions, back to the family’s first vines and forward to their sons, whose future is part of how the vineyards are treated today.
The Training At Baumgartner Weinbau, craft begins before a grape reaches the press: grape varieties, clones, rootstock and training systems are matched to soil and local microclimate. That kind of formation is slow by nature. It asks the grower to read differences from parcel to parcel, then make decisions before harvest that will still be present in the glass. For Lukas and Sandra, the aim is varietal, vintage-specific and site-specific fine wines with incomparable character and personal style. Their own words keep the work grounded in the daily rather than the abstract: "The effort to produce wines and distillates of the highest quality fills our daily life."
The Lineage The first Baumgartner generation started with winemaking as a hobby; Lukas and Sandra inherited the beginning, not a finished monument. Since 2002, their task has been to make that family beginning durable, disciplined and successful, while keeping the next generation in view. Their vineyards are in Tegerfelden, Goldwand/Ennetbaden, Lengnau, Endingen and Klingnau, a spread that gives the winery its language of place. The couple describe it plainly: "Since 2002, we — Lukas and Sandra — have been running our winery in the 2nd generation. Our vineyards are located in Tegerfelden, Goldwand/Ennetbaden, Lengnau, Endingen and Klingnau." Sustainability is not a decorative idea in this family line; it is tied to succession. As Lukas and Sandra put it, "Our sons want to continue our winery one day. We want to leave them and future generations with intact vineyards. Working sustainably and treating the natural environment with care is therefore extremely important to us."
The Table The wines are made from individual places and individual batches rather than treated as a single anonymous harvest. Grapes are selected and sorted in the vineyard into quality classes, then different wine types are pressed from those batches, with individual pressing and ageing methods chosen for each wine. The cellar’s work includes red wines, rosé, white wines, wine liqueurs made from port-wine vinification, and about a dozen distillates. Across that range, the connective thread is not sameness but specificity: variety, vintage and site are meant to remain legible. There is also motion inside the inheritance. Lukas and Sandra say, "The love of wine, openness to new things and the urge to innovate accompany us every day and fill our daily lives. We strive to always be one step ahead." In a second-generation estate, that forward step is also a return: to the soil, to the microclimate, to the family decision that what began as a hobby could become a life’s work.
