The Climb

Markus Molitor is the owner and winemaker of Weingut Markus Molitor, a role he has held since 1984. Over the decades, that work has taken the shape of a sustained ascent: patient, exacting, and tied to the contours of Bernkastel-Wehlen and the broader Mosel valley. Rather than expanding for its own sake, the focus has stayed on Riesling, with each parcel treated as something that has to be read on its own terms.

Today

The estate remains his working address, and Riesling remains the defining craft of the house. The philosophy is plain, but the reach is broad. Molitor has said: “Since then my ambition has been very clear: I want to try to help restore the wines of our Mosel valley to their former glory by producing unmistakable Riesling wines true to their individual vineyard identity.” That line sets out the method: restoration, clarity, identity. The aim is not a uniform stamp imposed across the range, but wines that carry the mark of their origin. In the Mosel, where steep slopes and long reputation matter, the work is to interpret the site carefully and keep distraction out of the way.

Signature

Markus's signature wines include Haus Klosterberg Pinot Noir Rosé, which broadens the estate’s expression beyond its Riesling heart, as well as Einstern* Pinot Blanc Qualitätswein - gelbe Kapsel, a crisp counterpoint in the lineup. Among the Mosel references most closely associated with his name are Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Markus Molitor 2018 and Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese 2017, wines whose titles alone carry the geography and hierarchy of the region. Markus Molitor Brut Sekt adds another layer, bringing a spark of celebratory energy to the portfolio.
