Coming Up

In the vineyard, Nicholas Brown started as a hand at a friend's family's winery in North Canterbury, learning the trade from the physical work up. Wine sales at Montana Wines followed, widening the brief from cellar work to the way wine is represented, moved, and understood in commerce. Vintage work in Marlborough brought the pace of harvest into sharper focus, where timing and labour set the terms of the day. The next stage was shaped by winemaking vintages at Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico, Opus One in Napa Valley, and Sandrone in Barolo. Each site added another reference point to the same discipline: hands-on work in established regions, season after season, with experience built by repetition rather than theory alone. The result is a career that reads as cumulative craft training, with each vintage adding another layer to how Brown approaches wine. Today, Nicholas is winemaker of Black Estate (since 2007), a role that has given his career a clear center of gravity.

Where They Are Now

At Black Estate in Waipara Valley, Brown’s work still sits on the same principles that marked his early years: attention to the vineyard, a steady hand, and an aversion to dressing up the work beyond what it is. Progress matters, but only when it is earned in the season’s actual conditions. In Brown’s own words, “I definitely feel that I'm growing.” It is a concise measure of a maker who treats wine as an ongoing practice, shaped by the vineyard, the vintage, and the repetition of doing the work well.
