The Path

Technical training sits behind the cellar decisions at De Wetshof Estate. Peter de Wet studied at Bishops in Cape Town and at Geisenheim Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, and that education gave his work a clear frame: method first, expression second, without losing sight of either. The result is a practice that is disciplined in structure but still attentive to what the wines are meant to show. At De Wetshof Estate in Robertson, South Africa, Peter de Wet holds both proprietor and winemaker responsibilities. That combination means the house style is not only inherited but actively maintained, with Chardonnay remaining central and freshness treated as a defining feature rather than a stylistic garnish. The estate’s identity is established, but the work still leaves room for small shifts in emphasis.

The Work Today

Chardonnay remains the central craft note. That focus is clear in the way Peter de Wet shapes the wines: bright acidity, citrus-led fruit, and no malolactic fermentation to soften the edges. The intent is definition over ornament, with a profile that stays brisk, clean, and direct from start to finish. His own reference point is the leaner style of the 1990s. That preference for restraint is carried through in the present work. He adds: “But since winemakers make the wines they like to drink, I suspect we’ll move back to that fresh, minerally style even more in the coming years.” The point is plain: palate shapes production, and style often moves in cycles.
