Winemaking at the University of California, Davis set the frame for Randy Meyer’s work in terms of patience, precision, and attentiveness. The cellar at Valley of the Moon in Sonoma County was the next step, where he began as winemaker and built experience through production rather than theory. Senior Winemaker posts at M. Draxton, Inc. And Geyser Peak Winery added further weight to a career formed in Northern California, with each role extending the same practical discipline one vintage at a time. At BARRA of Mendocino and Girasole Vineyards, the scope of Randy Meyer’s work now runs across both direction and execution. As director of winemaking of BARRA of Mendocino and winemaker of Barra of Mendocino and Girasole Vineyards, he holds responsibility for the shape of the wine as well as the continuity of the process behind it. The work depends on timing, judgment, and a measured hand, not on flourishes.

The Work Today

Since 2019, Randy Meyer has served as Director of Winemaking and Operations at the Redwood Valley winery, placing cellar work and operational oversight in the same remit. That means overseeing all winemaking activities for the organically farmed Barra and Girasole Vineyards wines, where the task is to protect the fruit’s intent while guiding it toward the finished bottle. His specialty is organic winemaking and wine blending, two disciplines that reward restraint, accuracy, and a steady palate. By 2021, the Winemaker title at Barra of Mendocino had been added to Randy Meyer’s responsibilities, widening the scope without changing the underlying brief. The work now spans both the making and the management of wine, from vineyard material through blending and finish. Balance, texture, and restraint remain the operative terms; the emphasis is on harmony over excess.

Signature

Randy's signature wines include Girasole Vineyards, 2020 Mendocino County Pinot Blanc, 2019 Barra of Mendocino Zinfandel, and Girasole Vineyards, Charlie’s Blend. Each wine shows a different register of the same approach, from the lift of the Pinot Blanc to the weight of the Zinfandel and the assembled character implied by Charlie’s Blend.

Acclaim

The progression from winemaker to Senior Winemaker to director marks the clearest recognition in Randy Meyer’s career. By 2019, the role had expanded beyond making wine to include the systems that carry it, joining practical control with expressive judgment at BARRA of Mendocino. The UC Davis education remains the base, while the Redwood Valley appointment defines the current work through organically farmed wines, blending, and operational command.
