i. Biography
In 1974, Rick Longoria entered wine as a cellar worker at Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma, and the work started where it should: with tanks, tools, and the repetition that teaches a cellar. “I got very lucky and was hired as a rookie cellar worker at Buena Vista Winery.” The line is plain, and the record is better for it. Before ownership or label authority, the trade was already teaching the basics that matter most: attention, consistency, and how to learn by doing.
The Climb
Rick Longoria trained at University of California, Berkeley, then went on to work as cellar worker at Buena Vista Winery from 1974. That sequence matters: study first, then the long apprenticeship of cellar work, then the accumulation of judgment that comes from handling wine day after day. In 1982, he founded Longoria Wines, turning an early entry point into a house built around his own standards. He remains founder, winemaker, and proprietor today, a continuity that reads less like reinvention than a steady refinement of the same discipline.
Today
Since 1982, Longoria has been the founder of Longoria Wines in Lompoc. The wines are built around purity of varietal and site expression, balance, and compatibility with food. That approach keeps the work in a clear register: less about ornament, more about structure, clarity, and a bottle’s place at the table. It is a style that treats restraint as a tool, and site as something to be shown rather than covered.
Signature
Rick's signature wines include Fe Ciega Vineyard Pinot Noir and Longoria 2014 Tempranillo. Taken together, they show a cellar interested in varietal character and place, with balance kept in view. The names point to a maker working across different grapes without losing the throughline of composure and site.
In Their Words “Wine is a natural product that reflects the diversity of grapes, soil and climate, and when human creativity becomes involved in the process it becomes challenging and rewarding.” “I seek to make wines that are true to their varietal, their site and are classically balanced.”
Recognition
Purity of varietal and site expression, balance, and compatibility with food define his craft. Rick Longoria says the framework himself, and the wording is useful because it is direct: “Wine is a natural product that reflects the diversity of grapes, soil and climate, and when human creativity becomes involved in the process it becomes challenging and rewarding.” The aim is stated just as plainly: “I seek to make wines that are true to their varietal, their site and are classically balanced.”
