Stephen Henschke

The Climb

Training at The University of Adelaide gave Stephen Henschke a technical base for work centered on precision and place. That education framed a career in which wine is treated as a direct expression of site, season, and subtle variation. In 1979, he became winemaker of Henschke, a role he holds today. Since then, the work has developed through continuity rather than resets, with each year adding to a practice rooted in the house’s history and identity.

The method is minimal by design: "Our winemaking is minimalistic in terms of trying to bring out the flavors of the vineyard." Stephen Henschke’s approach depends on holding back rather than building over the fruit, so the vineyard character stays readable in the glass. As he puts it, "We want the wine to taste like the vineyard." That principle keeps the work focused on preserving what is already there, using technique to reveal rather than obscure.

Signature

Stephen's signature dishes include Hill of Grace, Mount Edelstone, and Henschke Hill of Grace Eden Valley 2012. Together, these names reflect the contours of his reputation: wines that are spoken of in the same breath as place, lineage, and exacting care. Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone stand as enduring markers within the Henschke story, while Henschke Hill of Grace Eden Valley 2012 carries that identity into a specific vintage, anchoring the house style in a particular year. Stephen Henschke has received Institute of Masters of Wine, Winemakers' Winemaker Award.
