The Climb

Wine work for Wayne Bailey was learned hands-on, not from a distance. He worked side by side with vineyard workers and cellar rats, and that practical exposure — field, cellar, repetition, and observation — is what he says changed his life goals. Before wine, Bailey worked as an engineer at Corporate America, where structure, systems, and problem-solving set the terms of the job. Each step expanded the range of the work, but the decisive education came from the people working the vines and the cellar. Since 2003, Wayne Bailey has been owner and winemaker of Youngberg Hill / Bailey Family Wines. The role ties the work to a place and to continuity: keeping the farm moving forward while making the wine that comes from it.

Today

The farm is the frame for Bailey’s winemaking, with attention set on the soil, the vines, and the wider mix of plant and insect life. His goal is explicit: life on the farm should be healthier 50 years from now than it is today. That puts the work in long view. Wine is handled as part of an agricultural system, where the condition of the land matters as much as the bottle. Soil health, vine health, and the health of other living things on the farm are treated as the work itself, not as extras around it. Bailey’s measure is durability over time, with the farm kept under watch across seasons, not just vintages.
