Haley Fox and Lauren Fox, chefs at Alice’s Tea Cup on the Upper West Side, shape a tea house around scones and loose leaf.
The scones carry the argument first. At Alice’s Tea Cup on the Upper West Side, New York City, chefs Haley Fox and Lauren Fox built a tea salon where the stand arrives with weight, not ceremony. Haley founded the house in 2001 with Lauren, shaping it against the stiff grammar of hotel tea. Their line was plain: “Let’s open an unconventional tea salon, where pinkies needn’t be up, harp music needn’t be playing, and people actually get fed (and for all ages!).” The source image was Lewis Carroll rather than London formality, the Mad Hatter’s table where an unbirthday could be reason enough. Chapter I began on West 73rd Street, and the Upper West Side room still carries that first decision: tea as appetite, play as structure, fantasy held close to the plate. Haley later set the kitchen’s language into print with the 2010 cookbook, Alice’s Tea Cup: Delectable Recipes for Scones, Cakes, Sandwiches, and More from New York's Most Whimsical Tea Spot. Lauren’s part of the same house leans into comfort rather than polish for its own sake, the sort of menu sense that can hold Warm Lentil Salad beside a tier of sweets without asking either to apologize.
The beverage work begins with loose leaf and breadth. The Fox sisters drew from the Chado family’s tea fields in Sri Lanka and India, imported 120 teas, tasted through them, and shaped the menu around the blends that carried the room. That decision matters because tea is not garnish here. It is the program. Pots arrive with blends such as Alice’s blend, Herbal Chai, Sessa, Green Tea with Hibiscus, and lavender tea; the staff’s work is to steer the table without making the list feel like a test. The food follows the same principle of abundance. Scones sit at the center, oversized and made for jam and cream, with pumpkin scones and chocolate cranberry among the flavors most closely tied to the house. The savory side keeps the tea salon from becoming a pastry case: tea sandwiches, salads, eggs, brunch plates, and Haley’s Croque Madame with Lapsang Souchong smoked chicken. It is British afternoon tea turned toward New York appetite, more bench than parlor, more full table than porcelain performance.
The room does not treat whimsy as surface dressing. Alice in Wonderland murals, fairy wings for children, colored cups, tiered stands, and the sense of a grandmother’s crowded cabinet all work because the kitchen gives them ballast. The counter and the pass serve families, neighbors, and returning adults who first came in as children; that continuity has become part of the place’s material. Noise stays conversational, which lets the tea service keep its rhythm. A pot is poured, a scone is split, a child is dusted into the day’s fiction, and the table keeps eating. The original party room held 20, and demand later pushed the house toward larger gatherings of 50+. Those figures explain something about the room’s texture: Alice’s Tea Cup was never only a quiet tea stop. It was built to hold occasion.
In 2024, Chapter I changed hands, with Jeni He taking over the original Upper West Side address and speaking publicly about keeping the scones, tea selections, murals, and multi-generational pull intact. The useful close is not a promise of reinvention. It is the discipline of holding flavor steady while the house changes around it, one pot of Alice’s blend at 102 West 73rd Street.
