A return to the Rutherford cellar

The cellar decisions pass through Henrik Poulsen, head winemaker at Alpha Omega Winery in Rutherford, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc set the working language. Henrik Poulsen has guided the winemaking program here since 2019, but his time with the house reaches further back. He worked as assistant winemaker at Alpha Omega from 2006-2013, learning the estate from inside its own pace before leaving for a broader role at Acumen Wines. His return joined two chapters of the same bench: the early station, when the habits of the house were learned day by day, and the present one, when he carries the final responsibility for the cellar.

Before Alpha Omega, Poulsen worked at Newton Vineyard from 2000-2006, a period that gave him the technical base for the Napa Valley style he would continue to refine. At Acumen Wines, from 2013-2019, he served as Director of Winemaking and Executive Manager, widening the job from cellar judgment to operational command. That sequence matters here because Alpha Omega asks for continuity rather than performance. Poulsen’s role sits at the center of the estate identity, with Bordeaux-inspired releases as the clearest marker of his hand.

Bordeaux varieties in a restrained register

The program at Alpha Omega moves around still red and still white wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc named as the principal varieties. Poulsen’s work is most closely tied to Bordeaux-inspired releases, not as a borrowed phrase, but as a discipline of structure, restraint and proportion. The estate describes its production philosophy as sustainable and its scale as boutique, two terms that set the frame without replacing the work of tasting, blending and holding a line through each vintage.

Rutherford gives the program its address and its pressure. This is Napa Valley Cabernet country, and the wines Poulsen shapes are read against that expectation before they are read as anything else. In that arc, the method is less a single technique than a trained patience, repeated across seasons and brought back to the same Rutherford cellar.

The terrace beside the vineyards

The room at Alpha Omega is built for quiet attention. The winery presents itself in a modern farm-style house at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, with terrace seating set toward vineyards, a reflecting pond and water fountains. The mood is warm and inviting rather than theatrical; the staff work inside an atmosphere meant to let the glass stay central. Outside, the terrace gives the place its visible rhythm: water, vines, mountain line, then the wine in front of the guest.

That setting suits Poulsen’s register. His path has not been defined by abrupt turns, but by returning to a station with more range than when he left it. Alpha Omega’s next chapter is therefore not a spectacle to announce; it is the ongoing pressure under Henrik Poulsen’s hand in Rutherford.
