Bar Sardine

<p>Bar Sardine occupied a compact corner on West 10th and West 4th in the West Village, part of Gabe Stulman's cluster of neighbourhood restaurants that defined a particular strain of downtown New York dining in the 2010s. The format was gastropub by instinct: a pint-sized cocktail bar with serious food credentials, drawing from an earlier life as <em>Chez Sardine</em>, a Japanese izakaya, before settling into upscale bar food with a distinctly American accent.</p> <p>The burger earned the venue its most durable reputation. <em>The Infatuation</em> ranked it eighth on its list of top burgers in New York City, and <em>New York Magazine</em> included Bar Sardine in its Thousand Best, a shortlist that spans the full range of the city's dining scene rather than singling out fine dining alone. Those two citations placed the kitchen in credible company for a room that never pretended to be anything other than a neighbourhood bar with a well-considered menu.</p> <p>Beyond the burger, the menu ran through raw bar selections, chicken liver toast, beef tartare, and crispy boudin — a compact card that rewarded regulars who returned often enough to work through it. The price point sat in the moderate-to-upscale casual range, consistent with the West Village's broader positioning as a neighbourhood where serious cooking and informal settings coexist without contradiction.</p> <p>Bar Sardine has since closed. Its run illustrated how much a small room can accomplish when the format is honest about what it is: a bar that feeds people well, in a neighbourhood that has always had high expectations for both.</p>
