Cabernet kept at the center

Cabernet Sauvignon sets the work in motion for Rob Hunter, winemaker at Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga, before the glass reaches the garden table. He treats the variety as a discipline, not a decoration: fruit, structure, and varietal character have to arrive together, with flavor held inside a larger frame. His own language is direct: “Its all about Flavor. But it’s much more. It’s about Varietal Fruit Flavor.” The sentence has the plainness of cellar work, where a wine either carries its architecture or it does not. Hunter’s technical base came at University of California, Davis, then through jobs that kept him close to harvest and crush. He supervised the crush graveyard shift at Domaine Chandon from 1980–1981, worked harvest at Woodbury Winery in San Rafael in 1982, and from 1992 held the winemaker role at Robert Hunter Winery in Sonoma Valley. At Bennett Lane, that history narrows into a Napa Valley cellar where Cabernet Sauvignon remains the standard he keeps returning to.

The portfolio gives Hunter more than one register, but it does not pull him away from Cabernet or make that center feel secondary. Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Lynch Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon name the spine of the work plainly, while Maximus Red Feasting Wine, the winery’s initial bottling, brings a broader, blend-minded presence to the table. The name reaches back to the 2nd century Roman Emperor Magnus Maximus, yet the wine sits in the same practical frame as the Cabernets: fruit has to carry shape, not merely volume, and the idea of generosity stays tied to structure. Bennett Lane works at a small scale, with a sustainable production philosophy, and the house focus includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah, giving that focus a compact but varied range. The wines are still, red and white, with Napa Valley as the appellation named for the place.

A garden at the northern end

The cellar’s public face is quiet. Bennett Lane sits at the northern end of Napa Valley, in a modern Mediterranean-style building with a garden looking toward estate vineyard rows and the mountains beyond Calistoga. Tastings happen seated, often outdoors, with library vintages and estate Cabernet Sauvignon placed into a setting that favors attention over performance. Inside, the tasting room has the scale of a living room rather than a hall; outside, the garden keeps the work close to the vineyard without turning it into scenery alone. The place reads as family-owned and intimate, a house built for the slower pace of still wine. In that room, Hunter’s line about varietal fruit flavor lands less like a claim than a working instruction, especially beside Bennett Lane’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
