Matías Prieto reads the vineyard before he reads the tank, working as winemaker at Bodega Chañarmuyo in Chañarmuyo, Famatina. He was born in Mendoza, and that origin sits quietly under the practice rather than being made into a banner. Matías Prieto holds the role in a place defined less by ease than by adaptation. Bodega Chañarmuyo works in a rocky desert valley at 1700m, in Famatina, La Rioja, where the surrounding Andean hills make the vineyard feel exposed and enclosed at the same time. The house describes its production philosophy as sustainable and its scale as small. That matters because the work cannot disappear into volume. Prieto’s brief remains close to the material: vineyard condition, grape variety, cellar timing, and the discipline of letting site character carry into the bottle without forcing the point.

A high valley with a broad palette

The program at Bodega Chañarmuyo is built around still wines, with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Chardonnay, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Viognier in the range of varieties associated with the property. The spread gives Prieto several registers to work across, from structure and color to aromatic lift and white-wine tension.

At 1700m, the site gives measurement its own weight. High-altitude wine work is not a mood; it is a set of constraints on ripening, exposure, water, and timing. In Chañarmuyo, those constraints meet inhospitable terrain that has been brought into cultivation as vineyard and winery. Prieto’s training lets him treat those conditions as part of the method rather than scenery around it. The bottle begins outside, before the cellar has anything to correct.

The cave and the quiet

The tasting happens in a cave setting, with the cellar and the landscape held close together. The room is quiet rather than theatrical, a peaceful refuge amid vineyards, rocky slopes, and the mountain line around Famatina. Distinguished decoration gives the place a composed feeling, but the strongest detail remains the setting itself: vines in a desert valley, stone underfoot, altitude pressing on the pace of the work.

That quiet suits Prieto’s way of speaking about wine as part of a wider professional community. His own words point outward, toward Argentina’s nursery of colleagues and makers, rather than inward toward a solitary signature. At Bodega Chañarmuyo, the hand is visible in restraint: the agronomist in the vineyard, the winemaker in the cellar, and the cave tasting returning the glass to Chañarmuyo.
