Continuity in the Calistoga cellar

Cellar decisions at Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga still pass through the long memory of Brooks Painter, Winemaker Emeritus and Consultant. His role has changed, not vanished. After serving as Director of Winemaking at the house from 2005 to 2026, Painter remains close to the production conversation, carrying forward the habits formed through repeated vintages and the pressures that come with them. Before this station, his work moved through California cellars with different demands: winemaker at Felton-Empire Vineyards in Felton, winemaker at Leeward Winery in Ventura, winemaker at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, then operations manager at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville. That last post matters here because a winery of this size depends on systems as much as palate. Painter’s training at University of California, Santa Cruz gave him the scientific base; the rest came through time on the tools, where chemistry, biology, cellar discipline, and production judgment meet. In 2013, he was named Winemaker of the Year, a recognition attached to the career rather than a single bottle. At Castello di Amorosa, his signature includes La Castellana, a label tied to the identity he helped establish at the house.

Thirty one acres under a small program

The winery works at a stated scale of 25,000 cases annually from 31 acres, a size large enough to require coordination and small enough for the winemaking program to keep a visible relationship with its fruit. Castello di Amorosa farms and makes wine under a sustainable production philosophy in the Napa Valley AVA, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel among the named varieties. The range moves across still red, still white, still rosé, sparkling, and dessert wine, so the cellar has to carry more than one tempo at once. A red program asks for extraction, structure, and patience. Sparkling and dessert wines ask for different thresholds of timing and balance. Painter’s career makes sense against that spread: cellar practice first, then operations, then the advisory role of a predecessor who knows where the pressure points live.

Stone around the tasting room

The place announces itself through stone before it announces itself through wine. Castello di Amorosa was built as a 14th-century Tuscan castle winery, set on a hillside above Napa Valley vineyards, with cool stone-walled interiors, historic halls, an armory, a torture chamber, and terraces looking back over the vines. Inside, the tasting room sits within that medieval architecture rather than beside it; the romance is architectural, carried by shadow, masonry, and the quiet of rooms made to feel older than the valley around them. The cellar, the vineyard view, and the house’s theatrical rooms form one frame for the work. The risk in a place like this would be spectacle taking the lead.
