From the family cellar to his own name

The decisions start at the press and carry into the cellar; Jean-Philippe Trousset, winemaker at Champagne Jean-Philippe Trousset in Les Mesneux, keeps them close. His station is not a borrowed one. Before he put his own name on the house, he worked as manager at Champagne Trousset-Guillemart in Les Mesneux from 1992 to 2008, learning the pace of vineyard and cellar work through the family trade. The older line reaches back to Sacy, where Nicolas Guillemart is recorded as a vintner in 1697, and the modern handoff came through Jean-Philippe’s parents, France Guillemart and Jackie Trousset. He began taking over the business in stages in 1988, then opened his own winery in 2008. The producer later took the name Champagne Jean-Philippe Trousset in 2020, a change that made visible what had already become true at the bench and in the cellar: the domaine’s decisions now passed through his own discipline.

    Premier Cru parcels, held close

The work is grower-scale by design. The estate farms 7.6 hectares across Les Mesneux, Sacy, and Villedommange, all Premier Cru communes on the Petite Montagne de Reims, with additional parcels in Gueux. Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay move through an estate-only press, keeping the fruit tied to the house from vineyard to cellar. The soils shift by parcel, with chalk, argilo-calcaire, and sablo-limoneux ground shaping what can be blended later. Trousset works under viticulture raisonnée, with HVE certification held since 2017, and the stated aim is soil life as much as yield. That matters in Champagne because the finished wine is assembled from small decisions: the parcel picked at the right moment, the press fraction kept in line, the base wine judged for tension, the cuvée released only when the house style can hold its shape.

    The cellar beside the vines

This is not a Champagne house built around spectacle. The estate sits in Les Mesneux, with the cellar, the vineyard paths, and the tasting room held at a family scale. Conversation stays low. The countryside is close enough that the work outside the door feels part of the room rather than an image placed behind it. In that setting, the cuvées read less like a range for display than a map of the house’s materials: Rosé Extra-Brut, Millésimé, Terre d’Histoire, Les Croisettes, and NV Pur Chardonnay Anna T. Extra Brut. Each name keeps the focus on Champagne AOC, on the varieties grown here, and on a cellar that favors continuity over flourish.

    A house measured by continuity

The place matters because its independence did not sever the older line. It narrowed the responsibility. Trousset carries the Guillemart and Trousset inheritance through a domaine that remains small enough for decisions to stay personal, but broad enough in parcels to give the cellar real material for blending. The quiet thread to follow is the same one already in bottle: how Les Mesneux, Sacy, Villedommange, and Gueux continue to speak through Terre d’Histoire.
