Soil and stone under one hand

Gravelly clay and limestone set the first terms for Comte de Bournazel, winemaker at Château de Malle in Preignac, Bordeaux. His work here begins with a premise as practical as it is architectural: the vineyard and the château are one operating whole. The vines are not treated as a productive appendage to a historic house, and the house is not left to stand apart from the land that gives it purpose. He launched the full rehabilitation of both, binding agricultural ground and built inheritance into a single estate discipline.

That makes the role unusually exposed. Working at Château de Malle, each intervention also changes how the estate reads, from the rows under cultivation to the public face of the château. Comte de Bournazel’s station sits between cultivation and custodianship, where renewal is not a decorative act but the method by which continuity is made useful again. The predecessor named here is the estate itself, with its soil, stone, garden geometry, and the pressure of keeping them in conversation.

Two appellations on fifty hectares

Château de Malle works across Sauternes AOC and Graves AOC, a split that gives the cellar both sweet and dry obligations. The estate’s 50 hectares carry Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with gravelly clay and limestone under the vineyard. The house produces about 3,500 cases of Sauternes annually and 12,000 bottles of Graves white wine per year, figures that place the work at a scale where estate decisions still feel close to the hands that make them.

The program holds dessert wine, still white wine, and still red wine in the same field of responsibility. Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle give the Sauternes its classical frame; Sauvignon Blanc also belongs to the Graves white program. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon extend the estate’s range into red wine. The method is conventional, but the discipline is not generic. It depends on keeping two appellation identities legible without letting either pull the château away from its whole estate grammar.

The cellar beyond the gardens

The vineyard sits beside a 17th-century château, French gardens shaped in the manner of Versailles, a reflecting lake, and surrounding parkland. The setting is quiet, but not empty. It has the kind of stillness that makes the agricultural work more visible: a row under care, a cellar decision carried back into the tasting room, the geometry of garden and vineyard meeting without ceremony.

For a winery, the place has an unusually composed exterior life. The tasting room and vineyard tour belong to the same rhythm as the cellar, because the estate asks to be read as terrain, house, and wine program together. That is the texture Comte de Bournazel has chosen to work inside. The restoration does not separate polish from production; it lets the Sauternes, the Graves white wine, and the lake sit within the same frame.
