Rosé held to the cellar

Raimond de Villeneuve works rosé as a wine before a color, serving as winemaker at Château de Roquefort in Taradeau. At the bench-side of the cellar, that decision matters: Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Clairette, Vermentino, and Ugni Blanc enter a program where the category is not treated as seasonal shorthand. Raimond de Villeneuve has described the turn plainly: “I found a particular interest in making rosé as a wine, outside the abominable “rosé business” we know.” No named predecessor stands behind his current station, so his lineage is the one carried by method, by site, and by the wines themselves, which is the kind of inheritance a cellar can actually demonstrate. Corail sits inside that frame as a signature wine, not because it asks for noise, but because it clarifies his position. At Château de Roquefort, rosé belongs in the same discipline as red and white: fruit, stone, altitude, restraint, and the patience to let the category recover its seriousness.

Twenty-seven hectares above Provence

The vineyard gives the cellar its first instruction. Château de Roquefort works a 27-hectare organic estate at 360-390m elevation, on clay-limestone soils in AOP Côtes de Provence. De Villeneuve has put the site in one sentence: “Geologically like Cassis but at 1,300 feet altitude.” That is the useful measurement, because it joins bedrock to lift. The Mediterranean is close enough to shape the microclimate, while the height preserves freshness in red, white, and rosé wines. The production scale remains small, approximately 86,000 bottles annually across the range, which keeps the work legible as an estate practice rather than an anonymous flow of wine. Grenache Noir and Cinsault can carry perfume; Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre bring darker structure; Clairette, Vermentino, and Ugni Blanc hold another register of the site. The method is organic, but the more important fact is how little the place needs dressing. Soil, altitude, and careful picking do much of the speaking before the wine reaches the cellar.

Stone cellars and vineyard light

The cellar reads as a working room, not a stage set. Stone holds the temperature and the eye settles on practical things: vessels, thresholds, the path from vineyard to press, the quiet needed for decisions that cannot be hurried. Natural light comes through the old walls, and the tasting rooms look back toward the vines rather than away from them. That view matters at a winery like this, where the vineyard is not scenery but the first tool. The room stays quiet enough for the glass to keep its own pace. In that quiet, the estate’s rustic side and its elegant side do not compete. They are joined by the same discipline: clay-limestone underfoot, high-altitude fruit outside, and Corail on the table.
