The daily decisions begin in the vines: what to leave, what to cut, when to wait. Gonzague Lurton, winemaker at Château Durfort-Vivens in Margaux, has held that responsibility since 1992, working as owner and manager of the estate as well as the person whose name is tied to its method. The role is not separated from the land here. It runs from the vineyard rows to the cellar, through the slow arithmetic of ripeness, extraction, aging and restraint.

Château Durfort-Vivens sits in Margaux AOC, within a historic 14th-century château and 62 hectares of gravelly vineyards. Lurton’s work is framed by biodynamics and regenerative viticulture, not as decoration around the wines but as the working vocabulary of the property. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc carry the estate’s red-wine focus. The pursuit he is known for is purity: fruit that stays legible, structure that does not need force, and a finished wine that reads through the place rather than over it.

Amphora as a measure of restraint

The cellar gives that preference a physical form. Since 2018, Château Durfort-Vivens has aged wine in amphora, building what the estate identifies as the world’s largest amphora cellar by volume. The point is not novelty. Amphora changes the conversation around élevage: less emphasis on the mark of wood, more attention to fruit, texture and the line between oxygen and patience. In a region where barrels can easily become a language of their own, Lurton has made vessel choice part of the estate’s discipline.

The production scale is medium, held against the 62 hectares rather than inflated into theater. The house works with still red wine and amphora aging. The exact blend belongs to the vintage, but the stated direction is consistent: balance and purity, shaped through biodynamic practice and continuity in the cellar. A quiet château around the cellar

The atmosphere around the work is refined, quiet and controlled, the kind of place where the cellar sets the tempo rather than the room. The château carries its history without needing to perform it; the vineyard, the tasting room and the cellar sit within the same frame of restraint. Visitors encounter a private tasting setting, but the more telling texture is bench-side: the amphorae, the ordered cellar, the sense that the wine program has been edited toward clarity.

Margaux gives the estate its governing pressure. Gravel, Cabernet Sauvignon and the patience of red wine aging ask for a particular hand, and Lurton has stayed long enough for the method to become part of the property’s identity.
