Ten hectares under Pat Carmody

The work starts in the vines, with Pat Carmody, winemaker at Craiglee in Sunbury, reading a small estate before he reads a tank. Craiglee sits on 10 ha of vines in the Sunbury appellation, close enough to Melbourne airport for aircraft to be part of the distant geography, yet the work itself belongs to an older tempo: hillside rows, a historic bluestone cellar, and a cellar door scaled for quiet attention rather than spectacle.

Carmody’s role here is owner and vigneron, which means the station does not end at the cellar wall. His own account of the place is measured in care carried forward. “I explain to these people that we’ve been on the land for sixty years, and people before that for a hundred years… and we’re quite proud of our trees.” That is the clearest lineage Craiglee gives: land held through time, predecessors acknowledged without ornament, and a maker whose authority comes from staying close to the site. His signature wines, Craiglee Shiraz and Craiglee Chardonnay, keep the estate name at the front because the place is the argument.

Cool-climate Shiraz without theatre

Craiglee’s program turns on still wines from Sunbury fruit: Shiraz and Chardonnay at the centre, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and rosé also within the house range. The scale matters. Ten hectares do not allow the anonymity of volume; they ask the maker to know the slope, the season, and the limits of each parcel.

The older proof at Craiglee is historical rather than promotional. The site is associated with wines dating back to 1872, with examples known for longevity after over 100 years. That does not turn the present work into preservation for its own sake. It sets a pressure on the bench-side decisions of each vintage. Carmody does not need to make novelty carry the house style when time has already made its demand. The discipline is continuity, not reinvention.

The bluestone cellar and the hillside

The cellar has the feel of a working rural building before it has the feel of a tasting room. Bluestone gives the place weight; the hillside vineyard gives it line and exposure. The mood is rustic, classic and intimate, with the quiet of a small estate where the room does not have to compete with music, crowds or performance. At Craiglee, the cellar door sits beside the craft rather than above it.

That calm suits the wines. A glass of Craiglee Shiraz here carries the same name as the land outside, and the distance between vineyard, cellar and counter stays short. The setting is not polished into a script. It is a house with vines, a maker still at his post, and a cellar whose material memory reaches back to 1872.
