Family parcels taken back by hand

The family vineyards came back under Cécile Tremblay in 2002; as winemaker at Domaine Cecile Tremblay in Vosne-Romanée, she works from that act of return. Dijon gave her the formal training, but the domaine rests on a more intimate apprenticeship, the reading of parcels that had been in the family before she chose to bottle them under her own label. The first wines followed in 2003, and the house has stayed small, with 4 hectares in Burgundy and Pinot Noir as the central language.

Tremblay is the great-niece of Henri Jayer, a lineage that matters in Vosne-Romanée because it carries a certain expectation of precision rather than volume. She worked as winemaker at a facility in Vosne-Romanée until 2013; the current work is based at the domaine’s winery adjacent to her residence in Morey-Saint-Denis. That shift did not change the scale of the project. It sharpened the distance between family holding and finished bottle, keeping the maker close to both vineyard and cellar.

Organic farming before the label settled

Organic certification marked the domaine’s farming standard in 2005, with biodynamic practices also part of the stated approach. The method here begins before the fruit reaches the cellar: small holdings, farmed for Pinot Noir, in a Burgundy register where site is not an accessory to the wine but the point of the work. The house does not publish a full cellar protocol, so the most useful reading stays with what it does state: organic farming, biodynamic practice, still red wines, and a production scale held to 4 hectares.

The named bottlings include Échezeaux Du Dessus and Chapelle-Chambertin, wines that place the domaine within a Côte de Nuits conversation of parcel, exposure, and touch. No grand claim is needed for that. The craft is in the discipline of keeping concentration from turning heavy, in letting Pinot Noir carry shape without being pushed past its site. The cellar exists to receive that decision rather than correct it.

Quiet work in the Côte de Nuits

The setting is a vineyard estate in the Côte de Nuits, with tasting kept to the cave and the room held quiet. That quiet suits the wines. Vosne-Romanée asks for close attention, not spectacle, and the domaine’s scale gives the work a narrow frame: the cellar, the vineyard, the tasting room, each near enough to the other that the hand remains visible in the result.

There is no theatre in the way the place is described. The texture is more cellar than salon, more bench-side than performance: bottles from family parcels, Pinot Noir in still red form, and a winemaker whose station has been tied to these holdings since 2002. The next release to follow is not a program or an announcement, but the continued reading of Échezeaux Du Dessus and Chapelle-Chambertin through Cécile Tremblay’s cellar.
