Parcels before the calendar

Bottling waits for the parcels. Benoît Landanger, winemaker at Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay, has held the cellar and estate work together since 2023, judging sequence as much as technique. His post is both winemaker and estate manager, so the day does not divide neatly between desk, vineyard, and cuverie. The choices made in one place have to answer to the others. At this hillside domaine, that matters: the estate works 17 hectares, farms biodynamically, and carries holdings that include 7 Grands Crus and 3 monopoles in Volnay. Landanger's own language stays close to proportion. Speaking of a recent vintage, he said, “Of course, the quantity we produced wasn’t big but we like the quality.” The sentence is plain, and it fits a house where scale is not the point. His bottling plan follows the same pace, with “March bottlings for the Côte de Beaune wines and maybe April for those of the Côte de Nuits.” The method is not presented as spectacle. It is a cellar habit: let origin, timing, and readiness stay in conversation.

A gravity-fed cuverie for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

The program here rests on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, shaped within the Volnay appellation and the wider holdings of the domaine. The estate describes its farming as biodynamic and organic, and the work takes place in a gravity-fed cuverie above ancient cellars. That arrangement gives the cellar a particular discipline: movement matters. Fruit, must, and wine do not need theatrical handling to carry a clear imprint of site; they need decisions made at the right point in their passage. Landanger's known signatures, Clos d'Audignac, 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Feuselottes, 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Groseilles, and 2021 Volnay 1er Les Caillerets, point to a bench-side attention to named places rather than a single house style imposed across them.

Cistercian vaults beneath the hill

The cellar gives the work its register before a glass is poured. Domaine de la Pousse d'Or works from historic 16th-17th century cellars with Cistercian vaults, a setting that keeps sound low and attention close. The tasting is a cave tasting, intimate by design, with the room shaped less by display than by stone, age, and the quiet temperature of a working cellar. Above it, the hillside estate and cuverie make a vertical logic of the place: fruit comes in, wine moves by gravity, and aging settles below. The atmosphere is elegant because the architecture has already done the ordering. Nothing needs to be raised in volume.

What comes next is not a campaign but a sequence. Landanger has already named March for the Côte de Beaune bottlings and set April aside for the Côte de Nuits, a small but telling distinction in a cellar that treats timing as part of the wine's making. Endings here are parcel by parcel, and the final cue belongs to Clos d'Audignac.
