Estate Pinot Noir from Volnay slopes

From father to son on the Volnay slope

The cellar work turns on inheritance before it turns on style. Thierry Glantenay, winemaker at Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay in Volnay, took over from his father around 2011 and moved the family domaine toward its present form: full domaine bottling, with the fruit grown, fermented, aged, and bottled under the estate name. That matters in Burgundy, where the choice to keep the wine at home changes the feel of the whole house. It asks the vigneron to answer for each parcel, each vat, each vintage. The Glantenay family’s vine ownership in Volnay reaches back more than 500 years, and Thierry’s grandfather Louis Glantenay began domaine bottling in the late 1950s while also serving for many years as mayor of the village. The name on the label carries that handover plainly, Bernard and Thierry, father and son, predecessor and current maker. Thierry’s line is not built around novelty. He works the contrast that has long defined this address: Volnay for lift and transparency, Pommard for breadth and force, with Pinot Noir kept close to its slope rather than shaped into a house effect.

Estate fruit, native yeast, Volnay measure

The domaine farms about nine acres, a small scale in which parcel work stays close to the hands. Its production is now 100% domaine bottling, a change from the period when much of the wine went out to négociants. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in gravity-fed vats with indigenous yeasts, and maceration runs for approximately 15 days. Those choices keep the method legible without making it severe. Pinot Noir does not need a heavy hand here; it needs timing, extraction held in check, and the patience to let the vintage speak in its own register. Volnay’s steep hillsides bring drainage, exposure, and the kind of ripening that can turn generous quickly. In 2018, when Volnay vineyards could reach 14%+ alcohol, Thierry’s work was in keeping ripeness within balance, so the wines held shape rather than weight. The range gives him different pressures to read: Les Brouillards with freshness, Les Santenots with site, Pommard Riottes with firmer depth, and Volnay as the domaine’s clearest house language.

    A quiet cellar above Beaune

The place sits on the hill of Volnay near Beaune, in the register of a small family estate rather than a polished tasting machine. The useful vocabulary here is the cellar, the vineyard, the tasting room. The atmosphere is quiet and traditional, with the rustic concentration of a house that has stayed close to its village. Work gathers around the rhythm of Burgundy: pruning, flowering, harvest, fermentation, élevage, then the slower judgment of what each barrel will become. The village gives the wines their lifted frame, but the nearby Pommard parcels bring a darker counterweight. That exchange is the discipline of the address. Nothing in the room needs to announce it. The concrete facts are already enough: Volnay AOC, estate Pinot Noir, gravity-fed vats, and the long family line behind Louis Glantenay.
