One or two canes left on the vine

Leaving the pruning close to the plant, one or two fruiting canes on Guyot-trained vines, Giulio Fiamberti is winemaker at Fiamberti Vini in Canneto Pavese. Giulio Fiamberti now holds that inheritance as owner and winemaker, not as a detached custodian of an old name, but as the person responsible for matching parcels, grapes and cellar decisions to wines that still carry family and vineyard references in plain sight.

The house’s lineage is unusually legible. Eight generations of the Fiamberti family have made wine in Canneto Pavese, and the estate continues to speak through local varieties rather than through a broad international shorthand. Croatina, Barbera, Uva Rara, Ughetta di Canneto and Pinot Nero form the working vocabulary. Giulio studied at Università degli Studi di Pavia, but the stronger apprenticeship here is the estate itself: Vigna Solenga, Valle Solinga, Canneto Pavese, and the repeated discipline of making traditional Oltrepò Pavese wines in the same family frame.

Cement, native yeasts and long wood

Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Solenga gives the cellar its clearest technical sentence. The wine comes from a stated blend of Croatina 65%, Barbera 25%, Uva Rara 5%, and Ughetta di Canneto 5%, then ferments in cement tanks with native yeasts. After fermentation, it ages for about two and a half years in wood, partly in barrique and partly in tonneau. The method does not hide behind polish. It asks the grapes to hold their place through fermentation, then gives the blend time and oxygen before release.

The same regional grammar runs through Buttafuoco, Oltrepò Pavese Rosso and Sangue di Giuda, all built from the indigenous grapes that have long carried this part of Lombardy. Uva Rara brings floral and fruit notes; Ughetta di Canneto, used in small measure, brings spice from its terpene-rich skins. On the sparkling side, Caristoro Extra Brut turns to Pinot Nero in another register: Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico Pinot Nero DOCG, Blanc de Noirs, non dosato, 100% Pinot Nero, with 3 grams per litre of sugar and a minimum of 30 months on the lees.

The tasting room keeps family close

The room at Fiamberti Vini is described by the estate as a sala degustazione, a place for family and friends, wines and memory. That matters because the hospitality does not sit apart from the craft. It gathers around the same names that appear on the labels: Solenga, Caristoro, Buttafuoco, Canneto Pavese. The countryside setting, the vineyards around Valle Solinga and the tasting room’s rural scale keep the work near its source.

In the glass, the place reads through contrasts rather than spectacle: cement against wood, Croatina against Barbera, still red against Metodo Classico Pinot Nero. Conversation can stay at cellar level here, because the wines give it enough material. The 2020 Gambero Rosso Three Glasses for Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Sacca del Prete points to that same discipline, a named vineyard, a local blend and a bottle aged long enough to carry Vigna Sacca del Prete clearly.
