Since 2000, one role crosses vineyard and cellar

The harvest decisions start in the vines, then follow the fruit down through the horseshoe-shaped winery. Cecilia Guzmán, winemaker at Haras de Pirque in Pirque, Chile, has held the estate’s wine direction since 2000, with general management added in 2017. Her training at the University of Chile’s Faculty of Agricultural Sciences gives the role its agricultural spine, but the work here is not separated into neat departments. Guzmán has described the shift plainly: “Before, the vineyards and winemaking were managed as two separate things. Now everything is done together.” At Haras de Pirque, that means the maker is not only reading fermentations after the fact. She is also working through cultivation, organic practice, cellar choices, and the operating decisions that let those choices hold. The recognition attached to her career, first female winemaker general manager in Chile, matters because the title sits inside the day’s practical work rather than outside it. The station is both cellar and estate office. The hand remains in the wine.

Less ripeness, less extraction

Guzmán’s current direction at Haras de Pirque is a discipline of restraint: reducing ripeness and extraction, then letting the Maipo fruit keep its line. The estate works with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay across 100 hectares, under an organic philosophy that treats vineyard and cellar as one system. Her own language stays close to the ground: “We work almost organically anyway, so it’s not a big change. Just dealing with weeds and the need for more organic fertilizer are the biggest shifts.” Those are not decorative concerns. Weeds, fertilizer, harvest timing, and extraction all arrive in the same glass. Character and Albis are the named bottlings most closely attached to her signature, and both sit within a program that favors control over weight. The method is the long way because the adjustment begins before the fruit reaches the crush pad.

A horseshoe built for gravity

The building gives the work its shape. Haras de Pirque is a horseshoe-shaped winery designed for gravity-flow winemaking, a form that also nods to Chile’s oldest thoroughbred stud farm, founded in 1892. From the estate, the room opens toward vineyards, racetrack views, and the Andes foothills, so the cellar never feels detached from the land feeding it. The tasting experience is cave-led, quiet, and close in scale, with panoramic Andes views and lighting in the cava that keeps the eye on stone, glass, and wine rather than spectacle. The atmosphere is acogedor and personalized, with a warm, family-like register that fits a small estate better than a staged performance. Here, the cellar is not a backdrop. It is the architecture of the method.

What the estate keeps in motion

Haras de Pirque now belongs to the Marchesi Antinori family, but the useful continuity is local and tactile: Maipo fruit, organic practice, and a maker whose authority runs through both cellar and management. The estate’s next chapter is already visible in the same joined system Guzmán named, with vineyard work and winemaking decisions moving together around Character and Albis.
