From flour mill to cellar

A flour mill becomes a cellar before it becomes a name. Thomas Hardy, winemaker at Hardys in McLaren Vale, fixed that change to wine in 1878, when the Tintara site entered the Hardy story on the main street of the town. The hand behind it had already been formed by South Australian work: born in Gittisham, Devon, Hardy arrived in South Australia in 1850 aboard the British Empire, then worked at Reynella Farm before founding a winery at Bankside on the River Torrens in Adelaide in 1853. The sequence matters because it keeps the lineage practical. Soil came before label. Hired farm labour came before estate identity. Wine sat inside agriculture, manufacture, and trade, not apart from them. By 1887, the founding of Thomas Hardy & Sons gave that practice a family structure, a house name built to carry vintages beyond one season or one site. At Tintara, the later McLaren Vale chapter keeps the founder close to the cellar rather than to ornament: an old industrial building, converted for wine, still tied to production and town life.

Open ferments and basket pressings

The McLaren Vale site works as both cellar door and winery, with the brand drawing on a range that reaches across Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and fortified wines. For its Icon wines, Hardys points to open fermentation and basket pressing, methods that keep the cap, the skins, and the press cycle close to the winemaker's judgement. The named labels give the program its clearest spine. Eileen Hardy and Thomas Hardy sit at the top of the house language, with Eileen Hardy Shiraz first released in 1973 to mark Eileen Hardy OBE's 80th birthday. The cellar also pours McLaren Vale wines and cellar-door exclusives, but the brand is not confined to local fruit. Hardys states McLaren Vale as home while sourcing grapes from Australian regions to build blends across its scale. That makes Tintara less a single-block argument than a working centre for a wider Australian method: region, variety, fermentation vessel, press, and blend brought back to the house line.

The main street cellar

The cellar stands on 202 Main Road, with heritage buildings doing more than providing a backdrop. The old flour mill gives the room its first memory: manufacture before hospitality, use before polish. Visitors can see the original winery as part of the self-guided path through the site, and the working winery remains part of the setting rather than a story held elsewhere. On the bench-side of the tasting room, the Icon pours carry names that belong to the family record; outside, McLaren Vale's main street keeps the house in the movement of the town. Hardys also frames the site within 170 years of history and 9000 awards across the brand, but Tintara remains closely linked to production and the town. The cellar began as a mill, and the press work still points back to that building at 202 Main Road.
