Skins, seeds, juice and time give Thomas Rivers Brown his first reading as winemaker at Jones Family Vineyards in Calistoga. His Ziploc baggy mini-maceration method belongs to a wider cellar habit: handle the fruit closely enough to know when technique would begin to blur it. At Jones Family, that means working with estate hillside Cabernet Sauvignon from the southernmost Calistoga vineyards, where the blocks sit at 600-900 feet and look toward the valley from the base of Howell Mountain. Brown’s formation did not come through a single house style. After University of Virginia, his cellar practice moved through Sonoma and Napa posts, including Shibumi Knoll, Boars' View, Aston and Outpost. The through line is not varietal display, although Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir frame much of his work. It is calibration. He lets the vineyard set the limits of extraction, structure, patience and handling, then keeps the cellar from overtaking what the land has already decided.

Ten acres above the valley floor

The working scale at Jones Family is small: a 10 acres estate, farmed with a sustainable philosophy and planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. The standout material is the hillside Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in rocky soils with southern sun exposure. Those facts matter because Brown’s method depends on distinctions that arrive before fermentation, in the way skins toughen, seeds change, juice tastes and timing narrows. The site sits within the Calistoga AVA, and the estate’s position at 600-900 feet gives the fruit a different brief from the valley floor. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot give the program blending tools; Sauvignon Blanc widens the estate’s register. The center of gravity remains still red wine, with Cabernet as the main line of work.

A quiet hillside cellar

The setting keeps the craft close to the ground. Jones Family works from a hillside estate surrounded by 100 acres of virgin forest, with valley views, rocky soils underfoot and the southern exposure doing its slow work through the season. The tasting room is intimate, and quiet fits the winery itself. In that kind of room, a picking call can feel larger than a cellar move. Brown’s practice suits it: less performance, more attention to what the vineyard is saying at the edge of readiness. The estate’s elegance is not separate from the bench work. It comes from the same restraint, the same refusal to turn site into ornament.

Where the site sets the frame

Awards are not the grammar here. The grammar is hillside Cabernet Sauvignon, southern Calistoga light, and a winemaker whose broader work has been defined by letting place keep its bearings across different cellars. Brown continues to carry that pressure here. If the next release has a clear task, it is to keep the estate fruit legible, from the Cabernet Sauvignon grown at 600-900 feet to the blending work around Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
