His path to the bench runs through Fresno State, then through vineyard-side and cellar work in Los Olivos and at Martian Ranch, a practical California education shaped by fruit, timing, and the discipline of small lots.

Roth’s wider work has stayed in that lane: site-driven wine, a short chain of decisions, and a preference for methods that keep the place legible in the glass. At Martian Ranch, that means the craft begins outside the cellar, in a biodynamic estate where the vineyard sets the terms before the first fermentation starts. The house works at a small scale, 2500-3000 cases a year, and that scale matters. It keeps the winemaker close to the picking decision, the press cycle, the élevage, and the blends that follow.

Moon dust under the vines

The estate sits in a hidden valley of Alisos Canyon, on moon dust shaley clay loam, with hillside views around the vineyard rows. Martian Ranch & Vineyard is certified biodynamic, and its farming language is not decorative; it is the frame for the wines. Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Tempranillo, Albariño, Mourvedre, and Gamay Noir give the cellar a range of skins, acids, tannins, and aromatics to work with, but the program stays pointed toward freshness and low intervention.

The portfolio moves through still white, still red, and still rosé, with estate fruit as the center of gravity. The names may lean toward space, but the work is agricultural before it is playful. Biodynamic farming, organic sourcing, and a restrained hand in the cellar ask for consistency more than spectacle. The wines do not need a heavy imprint to announce the site; the valley, the loam, and the varieties already carry enough information.

A quiet tasting room on the hillside

The tasting room is clean, fresh, and tranquil, set into the hillside rather than staged above it. Outside, picnic areas look across the estate vineyards, and the room keeps a quiet register that suits the wines. This is not a cellar door built around noise. It is a place where the counter, the glass, and the view do most of the work.

That restraint gives the craft room to land. A pour of Albariño or Syrah can be read against the slope behind it, not against a scripted performance. The small scale is present in the pace of the place: the valley feels close, the vineyard feels close, and the winemaker’s decisions are not far removed from the glass.
