Estate work in volcanic Tokaj

Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárga Muskotály, Zéta and Kövérszőlő set the bench for Péter Molnár, winemaker at Patricius Winery in Bodrogkisfalud. His work here sits inside Tokaj rather than beside it: vines, cellar, administration and the regional bodies that shape how the appellation speaks. At the estate he carries general manager and estate manager responsibilities, a range that asks him to keep the property moving while remaining close to the land and the cellar decisions that give the wines their form.

Molnár’s station is not only the Bodrogkisfalud property. He also serves as institute director and associate professor at the Mathiász Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, and as president of Tokaj Council of Wine Communities. That wider work matters in a region where wine is both a daily craft and a civic inheritance. The same person who answers for the estate also works in the classroom and in council, where viticulture, standards and succession are argued with practical consequence. At Patricius, that makes his role less a title than a set of pressures held at once: vineyard, cellar, staff, teaching, governance, and the long continuity of Tokaj’s method.

A gravity cellar under an old press house

The estate works across 85 hectares and eight historic first-growth vineyards, a scale that gives the cellar a broad vocabulary without loosening its allegiance to place. The winery itself occupies a renovated 300-year-old press house, rebuilt as a modern gravity-flow facility above a landscape of volcanic Tokaj vineyards and tufa stone cellars. Gravity matters because it changes the handling. Fruit and must can move with less force, and the architecture becomes part of the method rather than a shell around it.

Patricius produces dry wines as well as botrytized Tokaj styles, with still white, still red, sparkling, dessert and fortified expressions named in the estate’s range. Molnár’s signature wines trace that span with Patricius 2017 Tokaj Furmint, 2018 Yellow Muskotály, 2017 Late Harvest “Katinka,” and 2016 5 puttonyos Aszú. The room keeps the press house in view. Stone, cellar coolness and the quiet of a small estate shape the tasting rather than stage it, and the terrace opens the work back toward the vineyards that feed it. Patricius offers cave tastings, terrace tastings and private tastings, but the more telling texture is spatial: a historic shell remade for gravity, with volcanic slopes outside and tufa beneath.

That arrangement gives the place its discipline. The cellar is not hidden from the house’s history, and the view is not separated from the work. In a region known for sweetness and acidity held in tension, Patricius lets the visitor stand between the old press house and the modern cellar, with Molnár’s wines carrying the argument in glass. The quietest close is the 2016 5 puttonyos Aszú, a bottle that belongs to this Bodrogkisfalud cellar.
