The same is true of his role as commercial and operational lead at Newton Johnson Family Vineyards in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley: the valley is not just a backdrop, but part of the proposition the estate puts forward. The public-facing side of that work is explicit in his own words: "I'd love to be able to go and speak to people about it. I'd love to go and be able to show them our wines, our region's wines, and things like that." For an artisan business, that kind of brief matters. As he puts it, "The only thing I haven't done is I haven't made a bottle of wine."
