Coming Up

Training at Elsenburg College set the technical base for Chris Williams before he entered Meerlust in Stellenbosch, South Africa, as an apprentice. From there, the work moved through cellar discipline: assistant winemaker at Meerlust in Stellenbosch, South Africa (1995–2000), a vintage worker with Michel Rolland in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, France (1997), and then Cellar Master. The progression is a familiar one in wine: learn the site, learn the cellar, learn the pressure of a vintage, and take responsibility for the finished wine. Later, Chris became head winemaker at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa (2004–2019). Today, he is founder / winemaker of The Foundry (since 2001).

Where They Are Now

Wine, in Chris Williams’s framing, is not treated as a finished object but as a craft shaped by site and climate. His own words point to the working logic of the cellar: soils, weather, and the maker’s role in translating those conditions into wine.

Honors

The clearest recognition in Chris Williams’s career is the appointment itself: cellar master at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch. In a trade built on continuity, that role signals trust in the cellar, in the vineyard’s expression, and in the standards carried through a major estate.
