Coming Up
Training at University of California, Davis set the technical base for Diana Snowden’s work, but the sharper apprenticeship came in the cellar and vineyard at Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, California. Beginning in 1997 as sugar sampler and later moving into vineyard sampler duties, she learned to read ripeness, seasonality, and the small adjustments that shape what ultimately gets bottled. In 2003, the move to Burgundy, France, and the role of winemaker at Domaine Dujac brought a different set of constraints into view: restraint, structure, and the discipline of working from vineyard expression. By 2005, back in Napa Valley, California, as winemaker at Snowden Vineyards, she had assembled a practice informed by both regions.
Where They Are Now
At Ashes and Diamonds Winery in Napa, Snowden works as winemaker with site-specific wines and single-vineyard designates at the center of the program. The method is built on a balance of old-world tradition and new-world rigor, with terroir-driven wines shaped by patient production choices rather than noise or excess. In her hands, quality is organized by site first: individual vineyards carry the clearest expression, while blends sit lower in the hierarchy as the more modest wine. Her own description is plain: “That is how I've established my quality hierarchy: My single vineyard designates are at the top, and my blend is all our fruit …. It's the more modest wine.” That preference for recurrence without repetition frames the work as close reading. “I just like seeing the same vineyard express itself a little differently every year.”
Signature
Diana's signature wines include Grand Vin №8 - 2023, Cabernet Sauvignon №3 - 2017, Cabernet Sauvignon №6 - 2023, and Mountain Cuvée №4 - 2019. The range points to the same priorities that define her cellar work: precision, structure, and a focus on what each vineyard and vintage can state on its own.
In Their Words “The most memorable wines carry an echo of nature’s heartbeat. They are the result of vineyard work without chemicals, on a thriving soil ecosystem, and native yeast fermentation with minimal handling in the winery.” “That is how I've established my quality hierarchy: My single vineyard designates are at the top, and my blend is all our fruit …. It's the more modest wine.”
