Formation
Swartland winemaking in the late 1990s was a place where vineyard decisions could define the work more than cellar correction. Eben Sadie entered that field in 1998 at The Spice Route, South Africa, moving from surfing into viticulture and winemaking with site expression as the central concern. In 1999, The Sadie Family was founded in Swartland, South Africa, giving that approach its own cellar and label. Regional study and collaborative projects extended the same question across different ground. Sequillo Cellars, co-founded by Eben Sadie in South Africa in 2003 and active until 2014, sat alongside work in Priorat, Catalonia, Spain, where Terroir al Límit was co-founded in 2004 and continued until 2010. The through-line was not novelty for its own sake, but a sustained test of how origin, variety, and farming read in finished wine. “I love everything that comes from the vine.” Eben has said.

The present work of The Sadie Family remains tied to Swartland and to the view that wine quality is established primarily in the vineyard. Eben Sadie’s position is direct: excellence is achieved where grapes are grown, with cellar work serving the site rather than replacing it. Variety selection and vine attention sit inside that vineyard-first frame.

Recognition for the wines has come through scored and category-based assessment: 99 Points, Red Wine of The Year in 2022; 98 Points in 2021; and Classic Ratings in 2008, 2007, and 2005.
