Elsenburg Agricultural School gave Ernst Storm the agricultural grounding that points the work outward: fields, weather, and the discipline of cultivation. From there, he built his practical base at Amani in the Stellenbosch region, Western Cape, where vineyard and cellar routine helped define his approach. His path then moved through winemaking roles at Renwood Winery in Sierra Foothills (2003–2005), Firestone Vineyards (2005–2008), and Curtis Winery (2008–2013). Taken together, those posts show a career shaped by repetition, observation, and the slow tightening of judgment. Storm Wines has been his own project since 2006, and that continuity matters. The role of owner-winemaker keeps the work tied to one hand over time, rather than to novelty or constant reinvention. From Elsenburg Agricultural School through his winery roles and into his label, the arc is one of accumulation: training, time in the field, and a method refined through use.

Today

At Storm Wines in Santa Barbara County, the focus remains on wines that register both vintage and site. The style holds to a classic frame, with old world influence for structure and new world technique for clarity. The aim is not excess but poise, with the vineyard and the year left visible in the glass. Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc carry the center of the work. That narrow focus gives the practice its shape, with attention concentrated on varietal clarity, proportion, and the differences that mark one season or one vineyard from another. It is a disciplined approach: restraint used as a working method rather than a marketing pose.
